How to decorate an Easter egg

The Easter season is approaching and one of the most typical crafts during these days is to paint Easter eggs in an original way. This is a very old tradition, which is still present in Europe and in some areas of Latin America, although with some variations. In the past, decorating eggs was an activity aimed at the upper class and with resources, who were dedicated to decorating the shell in a simple way. Nowadays it is easier to find chocolate or plastic eggs that recall the legend that children had to look for the Easter rabbit among the eggs. However, painting the Easter eggs It”s a fun activity that”s sure to keep the little ones entertained. For this reason, here we teach you how to decorate an Easter egg, with simple tricks and very easy techniques that will make your eggs the most original.

Steps to follow:

1. Prepare the eggs to decorate them. You can do it in two ways: boil the egg so that it is hard or empty its interior. You must choose the option depending on whether you want to make a specific decoration – use the hard-boiled egg – or, keep a permanent decoration – use the empty egg.

2. If you choose to decorate a hard-boiled egg, follow the directions below.

3. Boil the egg. For the egg to be cooked you must boil it with water for 8 or 10 minutes. Once this time has passed, let them cool.

4. Stain the egg. To do this, place the egg in a cup with food coloring – one tablespoon is enough – and two tablespoons of vinegar. You can create your own coloring by introducing natural ingredients that release color such as beets, for purple, into the water in which you have boiled the egg; coffee, for brown; spinach, for green or saffron for yellow, among others.

5. Let the water with the natural food coloring boil for 10-15 minutes. Remember that the longer you let the dye boil, the more intense the color will be.

6. Dip the egg in the food coloring and then pat it dry with kitchen paper. With a brush or a toothpick, you can incorporate original designs and drawings, you can also use watercolors.

7. If you choose to decorate an empty egg, follow the steps below.

8. To empty the egg, make two small holes at each end. Do it very carefully to avoid breaking, you can use a pin.

9. Dump the egg to empty it. Help yourself with a stick or toothpick to push the white and break the yolk. Once empty, clean the egg with water and dry it with paper. This is the best way to decorate an Easter egg, as it will prevent it from rotting and you can keep it indefinitely.

10. To paint the egg, hold it, inserting a toothpick into the empty egg and sticking it into a surface, such as a cork.

11. Paint the egg. You can color the base with paint, dipping the egg in a plastic cup. If you want the color to be blurry, add vegetable oil to the paint. You can also use acrylic paint or colored spray to decorate the base.

12. Once the base is dry, create your own designs and drawings on the shell. You can use various materials such as felt, ribbons or sequins, among others.
